Advent is a season of waiting, expecting and hoping. The first Sunday of Advent is the first day of the liturgical year in the Western Christian Churches and the start of the Advent season; a time of preparation for the celebration of Christ's birth at Christmas and the return of Christ at the Second Coming.
Advent is a Latin word and means “coming.” For hundreds of years, Christians have used an Advent wreath to remember and celebrate the first coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Today we will light the first Advent candle of HOPE!
The people walking in the darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. Isaiah 9:2-6
Jeremiah 33:14-16, NRSV
14 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 16 In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
